Powfoot is a James Braid designed course and has all the usual challenges of links golf with gorse bushes and undulating slick greens along with a wartime bomb crater to negotiate on the ninth hole. It has beautiful southerly views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District.
Southerness on the Solway Firth is a real classic open links course, with views of the Cumbrian Fells to the south and Criffel Hill to the north. It was designed by McKenzie Ross in 1947 and the Scottish Amateur Championship has been played here three times.
Silloth on Solway sits on the English side of the Solway coast and is laid out over sand hills just west of the town. It is a regional qualifying course for the Open Championship with fine views to the Galloway Hills in the north and to the Isle of Man and Lake District in the south.
The Solway Firth is one of Britain's most scenic areas with a backdrop of the Galloway Hills and the Lakeland Fells. It has some of the most fantastic but little known links courses that South West Scotland and Northern England have to offer. One designed by James Braid, another has hosted the Scottish Amateur and the final one is a regional qualifying course for the Open Championship.
